With dreams of becoming a U.S. Marine fighter pilot, Ed McMahon instead spent two years as a training instructor during World War II. He finally got his orders to join the Pacific fleet in 1945, but those were canceled after Japan surrendered. He was working as a TV host in Philadelphia when the Korean War broke out. In 1952 McMahon (pictured below in Korea, Getty Images) was recalled to active duty to pilot the Cessna O-1 Bird Dog.
