A Dallas police sniper shot the driver of an armored van who had earlier opened fire on officers outside the department’s headquarters but investigators were unable to say whether he was killed, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said today.

Dallas police said snipers fired at the driver through the front windshield about 5 a.m. today as it was parked at a fast food restaurant in Hutchins, Texas, about 13 miles away from the department’s headquarters. Police planned to send a robot to the van to see if he was still alive.
